The Orion Nebula presents one of astrophotography’s greatest dynamic range challenges. The blazing Trapezium region at its heart can easily blow out while the delicate outer wisps disappear into noise. The solution? Capture multiple exposure lengths and combine them using HDR techniques. In this post, I’ll walk through my workflow for combining 60s, 120s, and 300s exposures taken with the SVBony SV220 dual-narrowband filter.

The Orion Nebula (M42) is one of astrophotography’s most rewarding yet challenging targets. Its extreme dynamic range—from the blazing Trapezium region to the delicate outer wisps extending into the surrounding molecular cloud—makes gradient correction particularly tricky. In this post, I’ll walk through my experience using PixInsight’s MultiscaleGradientCorrection (MGC) tool on M42, including the pitfalls I encountered and the settings that finally worked across three different filters.

What's my processing workflow?

In order to record and remember I figured it would be beneficial to post my current workflow. This is based on various youtube creators pointing to similar workflows. At the moment it seems to work great, but I will be modifying some of the details within the workflow.

  1. Stacking

    • Weighted batch pre-processing
  2. Gradient extraction

    • GraXpert
  3. Color Correction

    • SPCC
  4. Green Removal

    • This step is not necessary due to SPCC already incorporating some of the green removal.
